Is Modern Pop Music Creatively Bankrupt?

July 20th, 2006 by jp received 4 Comments »

Since I made a choice to listen primarily to dance music, I have felt old…

Muse, Coldplay, The Mars Volta, etc. All of these post-pop bands and their fans baffle me. I fail to see the originality or inspiration in their music. I readily admit to liking Gnarls Barkley quite a bit, but The Gorillaz are beyond me. Perhaps I am just not tragically hip, but I do not understand the appeal of post-pop, sites like Pitchfork, the fans, and those of a similar ilk.

Someone explain to me why this music is relevant or important, because sonically I find this stuff boring and lyrically I fail to relate, or connect.

Am I old? Am I out of touch with what has happened to my generation in the US? Or am I genuinely right in feeling that popular music, and post-modern popular music in particular, are shams holding nary a candle to The Beatles, Nirvana, or even Weezer?

Don’t even get me started on emo…

No, I agree with you, but then I am old. HA! I think you just have different taste than the main stream. You wouldn’t question yourself if everyone liked Britany Spears and you didn’t. Why question yourself it you’re not into Coldplay? I could never get into Radiohead and it seems all my friends they they are the second comming.

I feel old for a different reason. When I go to Kareoke there is nothing I can sing except a few 1980s songs or earlier. My friends sing various hip hop or rap songs that I maybe have heard but not enough to know the words. Of course I do know newer music but nothing high enough on the charts to make it to Japanese kareoke. Maybe I’ll try Jack Johnson next time :-p

It’s weird, but lately I have been listening to cuban salsa from the 60s. There is something soothing about it, and it reminds me of home in Miami.

I agree with the Karaoke thing… But karaoke is a haven for modern pop whores, and singing the 80s songs are the only way to have a really good time. I’d much rather sing Simple Minds – Don’t You (Forget About Me) than some silly R&B song of the week.

Gman’s old, but then so am I.

Britney Spears /does/ suck, but Christina Aguilera can actually sing. I’m giving up on Last.fm because they think Coldplay is a good recommendation because of all the Rob Zombie I listen to. Gorillaz are an acquired taste, but I don’t see how you can lump them in with all other pop; especially after admitting an affinity for Gnarls.

Well, Gnarls seems more real than Gorillaz. To me, Gorillaz are a production experiment, while Gnarls are actually artists.
